My top MOM Organizing Tips!
Let’s face it, there is never enough hours in the day to complete a mother’s to-do-list. Being a productive mom is as they say “the hardest job in the world” and that could not be more true. There are a few organizing tips, as a mom myself that I try to live by.
10 Minute Tidy Up
There’s nothing more satisfying than waking up to a clean and organized (to some extent) home. When the kids are finally down I take ten minutes in my evening to go tidy up the house-put dishes in the dishwasher, put in a load of laundry, sweep the floors… It makes a huge difference in not only keeping the house clean and organized, but also for your own well-being. Mess = stress
Yes I have a ‘problem’- it’s my label maker and I love it! Not only is it visually pleasing on mason jars in your pantry or placed on for harder to reach baskets, but it also just makes sense! If you take the time to label things in the long run it will make your life easier because you know exactly what and where it is. One task I’ve completed more recently is labeling all our large clear seasonal and holiday containers in our storage room- game changer!
This is probably one of my favourite tips and tricks. Simply put, time blocking is blocking off specific times in your day to devote yourself to a specific task. Some people time block every single hour of their day! It’s kind of like an anti-to-do-list (which I’m still a fan of lists and likely always will be) where this makes you more accountable for specific tasks that need to be completed. Or in other words it allows you to focus on one given task instead of trying to multi-task multiple to-do-list items. By blocking your periods hourly it allows you to maintain your focus on one task and more likely to actually complete it. If you want more info on this let me know because like I mentioned above it’s one of my favourite mom hacks!
This is hands down the most important tip on my list. If you aren’t taking care of yourself first how on earth are you going to be able to be the best mom you can be for your family? There are so many ways to show yourself some love- taking a bath, booking a massage, exercising, sleep… find what you enjoy and what works for you. Your mind and body handle stress better when you are looking out for number 1-you. And it’s not being selfish! It’s about maintaining a healthy balance between being a productive mom and being just a plain old human.
An extremely efficient tip is having a designated bin or basket (that is clearly labelled!) for items that you are ready to get rid of- whether it be to donate or give away to family or friends. Sometimes I even use regular fabric bags- easy to use and bring to donation center or a friend’s house. This makes purging and decluttering significantly easier- ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’ Place these bins or bags somewhere as a reminder, like your garage or entrance so that when you’re leaving the house you can always make a pit stop at your nearest donation center!
Load of laundry
This may sound a tad bit mundane but taking the time first thing in the morning or right before bed to toss in a load of laundry is a huge savior. It literally takes less than 5 minutes and just helps you keep on top of things- especially when there’s multiple little human beings in the house…
I’m all about a colour coded calendar- completely organized with all family members’ appointments, activities and special occasions. It’s your life all organized in one place and an easy-to-find daily reminder. I’ve been making custom calendars for years for ourselves and other family members. It’s also a great way to display photos from the previous year that you’ve unfortunately forgot about!
Make the bed
It takes a minute to make the bed and it starts your day in the right positive direction. I hate coming in to our room with a messy bed- I want it be my 3 C’s – clean, comfortable and cozy! If my 5 year old can attempt to make a bed any grown adult should be able to make this task part of their daily routine!
Ask for Help
There’s no shame in my game- if I’m overwhelmed and exhausted I ask my loved one’s for help. Whether it be my husband or both sets of grandparents (I know- how lucky are we?!) I’m not ashamed of asking for extra hands. I want to be super mom but like we’ve discussed earlier I also need self-care. Keeping your sanity is what’s going to keep you on the track of being an organized-productive mom, and asking for help and support doesn’t make you less of one.
